Job Design / Analysis / Evaluation
The importance of proper Job Design comes to play when organizations hit certain critical mass in their growth and evolution. It is less critical in the early days when the organization is small and people do and share everything.
As the organization grows, that model loses effectiveness and job specialization and clear role and accountability descriptions become crucial to sustaining effectiveness. Failing to recognize this issue and taking action will result in things falling between the cracks. Further down starts confusion about responsibilities, hand-overs, value to the organization and appropriate remuneration. At this stage, organizations run the risk of not sufficiently rewarding and utilizing talent, or overpaying and under-utilizing, both of which are detrimental to effectiveness. A prudent course of action would be to start thinking about organizational structure and types of jobs and roles, and their respective value to the organization as early as possible.
A final argument for the importance of proper Job Design is for staffing purposes. If the jobs are not designed and evaluated properly it become much more challenging to identify best-fit candidates and staff them properly.
Job Design is an important enabler for Organizational Effectiveness, as well as a necessary component of an effective Compensation and Benefits system.
